About Chrissy

I have a BFA in Painting and a BA in Art History from the University of Washington (2004), and an MAT (Teaching) from the University of Puget Sound (2007). I currently teach painting and drawing in Tacoma, WA.

I grew up in Tacoma, and have spent most of my life living in the Tacoma/Seattle area. I have also lived in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Rome; and I have travelled extensively. To date I have been to 14 countries.

My mom says I have been drawing people since I was old enough to pick up a pencil. My favorite medium is oil paint, and I’ve enjoyed working with both abstract and figurative subject matter. I am very interested in art history – both the movements and styles that came before me, as well as the history of the materials that I use today.  For example, one of my favorite pigments (yellow ochre) was recently discovered at a site believed to be 100,000 years old. I keep a shelf in my studio with a variety of natural objects that pigments have been made from, and I have even tried my hand at making a couple of pigments. This is an ongoing process, and one that has been deeply rewarding for me.

I’ve also enjoyed learning how to work with other mediums including clay, dyes, and to a much lesser degree glass. One of the things I cherish most about these experiences is the way they have helped inform me about my chosen medium, painting. I find that those experiences help me to understand why I am a painter, and not a potter or glassblower, as much as they provide me with opportunities to expand my artistic palette.

I've got a wonderful husband, Mike (of both The Mike Stories and Microshak) who graciously helped me create this site.
